Disney Channel Original Movie: 'Building a Better Boy' Casting Details

On the Brink Productions in association with RCR Pictures are currently gearing up to begin production on the Disney Channel Original Movie "Building a Better Boy". The Casting Society of America ARTIOS Award nominated casting directors for the movie are auditioning talent for the starring, co-starring, and supporting roles. Several teen roles are being cast as well as adult roles. The extras and stand-ins will be cast closer to the start of filming in late July, 2013. Shooting will take place in Toronto. "Building a Better Boy" centers on a group of teenage geniuses who hijack an android prototype from their father's lab and program it to be the world's most perfect boyfriend, unaware that it's armed with a nuclear weapon.

The story follows Gabby and Kat who are a pair of super-smart high school students, two best friends who can’t scare up a date between them, probably because they scare boys off. After they conspire with Kat’s brother Bart to hijack their father’s latest piece of research and program an android prototype into becoming the World’s Most Perfect Boyfriend, Kat has a new beau for herself, a 17 year old dreamboat named Albert who is thoughtful, athletic, caring, smart, doting, charming, loveable – and armed with a nuclear weapon that could go off at any second if Kat pushes the wrong button. 'Star Wars Rebels' Pilot To Launch On Disney Channel

[Via EW.com...]

Star Wars Rebels, a one-hour animated pilot already in production at Lucasfilm, is scheduled to premiere in Fall 2014 on the Disney Channel before the new brand leaps to Disney XD for the ongoing series, according to Lucasfilm sources.

The series will mine material from the 19 years that follow Episode III: Revenge of the Sith and precede the Episode IV: A New Hope. In other words, using the life of the Skywalker twins as a measure, the series will be active in the story years that come after their separation as newborns and before their (unwitting) reunion on the prison level of the Death Star.

No word on whether the show will feature Darth Vader (who would be in the Empire’s power consolidation years and earning his reputation) or even pull in a character like Han Solo, the smuggler and cynic who becomes an unlikely freedom fighter when he opts to stand with his friends against cosmic odds. The title of the show is vaguely phrased in a way that any rebel — even a Boba Fett or Ahsoka Tano might qualify as a title character merely by walking an outsider’s path.

The series has three executive producers: Dave Filoni, the point man on The Clone Wars animated series that launched in 2008; screenwriter and producer Simon Kinberg, who has a flair for tonal rewiring and energizing familiar brands with new edge (e.g.: X-Men: First Class, Sherlock Holmes); and Greg Weisman, whose credits include well-regarded work on Young Justice and The Spectacular Spider-Man.

A press release that was being readied Monday morning included a quote from Kathy Kennedy, the hand-picked successor of George Lucas as Lucasfilm president as well as an elite producer (Jurassic Park, Schindler’s List) since the 1980s. “I couldn’t be more excited to explore new corners of the Star Wars universe,” Kennedy stated in the release. “I think Star Wars Rebels will capture the look, feel, and fun that both kids and their parents love about Star Wars.”

Kennedy, who has brought a new vigor and decisiveness to Lucasfilm in-house culture that (a bit like Obi Wan Kenobi out in the lonely desert) seemed to forget some its fiery rebel heritage as the dust of passing seasons gathered.

Kennedy shocked some observers when she jettisoned a well-underway Lucasfilm initiative to re-release the prequel trilogy in 3-D. The decision was not cheap but allowed her to turn all engines toward the shared horizon: new Star Wars stories that incorporate the characters most familiar to fans that sat down in the dark in those Jedi summers between 1977-1983. The centerpiece of the new focus is the third trilogy, with a first installment expected in 2015 or 2016 and directed by J.J. Abrams.

The new venture will put considerable pressure on the creative team. The animation process is not a fast one, although it it was not clear Monday how long Filoni and his colleagues have been working on the new show. For the fans who see Kennedy’s priorities as a new hope for the Jedi universe as entertainment, the news of Star Wars Rebels might bring to mind an exchange from 1977 space epic with a now-relevant pun: The Rebellion could really use a good pilot…

Disney Gets That Kids Want To Curl Up With Their TV

[Via forbes.com...]

Anne Sweeney
In the constantly changing technological landscape, TV companies have to decide how easily they want to make it for viewers to watch their shows. Do they stick with the traditional model of premiering shows on networks and later repackaging them on DVD and online? Or do they try to make the shows as widely available as possible even if it risks fewer people watching the shows on TV … where the advertisers are.

At Forbes’ Power Redefined Women’s Summit on Thursday, Disney Media Networks Co-Chair Anne Sweeney spoke about the fact that Disney now streams its live content on tablets and mobile phones through the Disney WATCH app which lets kids watch shows like Doc McStuffins and Phineas and Ferb online with an authenticated connection.

“We believe media is becoming more personal because you can hold it in your hand,” said Sweeney who was speaking on a panel about the new dynamics of connectivity along with Gayle King, Google ‘s Susan Wojcicki and The Muse co-founder Kathryn Minshew.

Sweeney recalled when the company was testing the WATCH app and she saw  two little children curled up together on the couch watching Disney even though there was a big TV in the room. She realized that kids liked the intimacy of watching their shows in such a cozy way.

Disney is embracing the changing relationship with its customers by making the company’s content as accessible as possible. (Although not every cable company has yet signed on to WATCH.) It’s not hurting the company’s bottom line. For the first six months of the year Disney reported $10 billion in revenue from the company’s media networks, up from $9.4 billion for the same time period last year.

Sweeney and her fellow panelists also talked about how technology is helping, or hurting, our ability to connect. King, who admits she struggles with technology, said that she prefers face to face interaction but she appreciates the fact that Skype lets her talk to her son who is living in Asia.

Wojcicki pointed out that the Internet helps people who are dealing with illnesses or other problems connect with similar people all around the world and gain the power of a supportive community. They all agreed that we’re only going to get more connected through technology but the challenge is going to be getting out of our little bubbles to find new things to like.

Tim LaGasse lends a hand on Disney XD’s hit ‘Crash & Bernstein’

[Via nydailynews.com...]

Comes back for second season to play the loud and rude adolescent pal of Cole Jenson's Wyatt

Tim Lagasse and Crash meet with the press on the Disney set in L.A.

Tim LaGasse was a high school student in New Haven when he learned it was possible to get a college degree in puppetry.

“I said, ‘Wait, that’s a job?’ ” recalls Lagasse. “And then everyone in my family spent the next two years trying to talk me out of it.

“My dad to this day is baffled that I’ve been making a living at it for 20 years.”
Those years have included stints with puppet projects as prestigious as the Muppets and “Sesame Street.”

They have also, in the earlier years, included putting on a bear costume and delivering singing telegrams.

That’s not a bad memory.

“It’s good training,” Lagasse says. “You learn to be entertaining and leave. That was particularly useful at children’s parties, which I also did a lot of. The most important skill is knowing when to leave.”

At the moment that’s less of an issue. Lagasse today is the voice and puppeteer for Crash, the co-star of the Disney XD show “Crash & Bernstein,” which launched in October and airs Mondays at 8:30 p.m.

It just got picked up for a second year, which is good news and also a tribute to Crash's resilience.

“He’s lost his head, he’s been trampled,” says Lagasse. “Bad things happen to him all the time. Fortunately, he’s a puppet, and you can do anything to a puppet.”

That also works the other way. Crash can do almost anything to the people around him, though most of his assaults are verbal.

He was brought into the world at the Build-a-Bestie craft store by 12-year-old Wyatt Bernstein (Cole Jenson), to be the brother Wyatt never had.

He has minimal social graces and no filters, traits Wyatt obviously finds welcome and Lagasse says he cherishes.

“He’s loud and rude,” says Lagasse. “Exactly what every 12-year-old boy wants to be.

“I’m 40 and I can say things that 4-year-olds would say.”

At first, Lagasse admits, no one was sure how “Crash & Bernstein” would play out.

“After Eric Friedman created it, we didn’t know exactly where it was going,” he says. “We’re still learning. But Disney knows what it’s doing. It does all this stuff incredibly well.”

The success of “Crash” has rearranged his life somewhat. “I liked to build puppets,” he says. “I haven’t had as much time for that and I miss it.”

But a steady sitcom is a good consolation prize. Probably even better than delivering singing telegrams in a bear suit, though Lagasse says those days were full of good life lessons.

“You also learned not to be self-conscious,” he says, holding up Crash and noting how, at this point, everyone under 10 would ignore him completely and talk only to the puppet.

“As long as someone’s laughing, I’m happy.”

Bop & Tiger Beat Exclusive Q&A with Jessie’s Karan Brar!

[Via bopandtigerbeat.com...]

We love all of the characters on Disney Channel’s hit show Jessie, so we were super pumped when we got the chance to have Karan Brar, who plays Ravi, answer a few questions. Check out our EXCLUSIVE Q&A with Karan below!

BOP&TB: Tell us a little bit about your character, Ravi, on Jessie.
Karan Brar: Ravi came to America about a year ago, so he has his own way of living and his own style. Since he didn’t grow up on the U.S., he acts completely different than every one else and as everyone can see, Ravi is one of those people that isn’t afraid to speak his mind.

BOP&TB: What do you enjoy most about playing Ravi?
Karan Brar: What I enjoy most about playing Ravi is that he is always doing wacky, goofy things!

BOP&TB: How are you similar or different from your character in real life?
Karan Brar: We are similar cause we aren’t afraid to be ourselves around others, and we are different because I don’t freak out as much as Ravi does in bad situations!

BOP&TB: Is it difficult for you to have to change your accent on the show?
Karan Brar: It’s actually not that hard. The hard part was learning the accent!

BOP&TB: What is it like working with all of the animals on set (lizards, bunnies)?
Karan Brar: Working with the lizard, Frank, is SO cool! But it’s a little scary since he has razor sharp teeth!

BOP&TB: What are some pranks you guys pull on each other on set?
Karan Brar: We pull all sorts of pranks! Sometimes we record each other doing the chicken dance behind someone when they are not paying attention. It’s SO much fun!

BOP&TB: What is it like having Debby Ryan as your nanny on the show?
Karan Brar: It’s really cool! Off set, Debby is like a sister to us, and when she plays our nanny on the show it’s really fun too!

BOP&TB: What do you and the rest of the cast do outside of filming together?
Karan Brar: We do all sorts of stuff! Sometimes we go laser tagging or to an amusement park.

BOP&TB: What are some there any funny/crazy stories that you and the cast have together?
Karan Brar: One time Debby, Cameron and I were dressed as zombies for an episode, and Debby had recently gifted us with a marshmallow blaster, so we went to the set of A.N.T. Farm to scare China and the rest of the A.N.T. Farm cast! We pelted them with marshmallows, but at the end we had to clean it all up!

BOP&TB: What is one of your favorite memories from being on Jessie?
Karan Brar: One of my favorite memories from Jessie is when Cameron and I were supposed to be freezing cold, so hair and makeup put fake ice crystals on our faces and in our hair, it was really cool!

BOP&TB: If you could choose someone to guest star on Jessie, who would it be? Why?
I think it would be cool for Selena Gomez to guest star in an episode because we know Ravi has a crush on her!
